Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan today is a unique combination of the many cultures and empires that have passed through, as well as home to some of the most stunning natural landscapes of the Caucasus. Whether you want to explore the most modern corners of cities or escape into the mountains or beaches, Azerbaijan has something to offer.  Azerbaijan, the nation and former Soviet republic, is bounded by the Caspian Sea and Caucasus Mountains, It borders Russia and Georgia to the north, Armenia to the west, and Iran in the south. The climate here is temperate with a marine influence therefore a constant marine breeze. The best time to visit Azerbaijan is April to June and September to October. You can also participate in the Novruz Bayrami celebrations each March, which mark the Persian New Year. You won't want to miss out on the craft shopping in Azerbaijan - save space in your suitcase for silk, silver and maybe a carpet.

The port city of Baku, the cultural, industrial and political capital of Azerbaijan is located on the western Caspian seaside, on the bay shores of the same name in the southern part of the Apsheron Peninsula, rich in its oil fields. Right in the center of Baku is Icheri-Sheher, the walled city that once housed the entire population of Baku.It has retained its original, medieval walls. Just walking through the narrow streets here is a pleasure in itself. The other site is Gobustan, home to hundreds of thousands of petroglyphs depicting ancient life. Go beyond the obvious with trips to Sheki, Khinalug, Ateshgah, or to the many fortresses and temples that were staples of life in the region for centuries. Some of Baku’s contemporary landmarks include the Zaha Hadid–designed Heydar Aliyev Center, and the Flame Towers, 3 pointed skyscrapers covered with LED screens. Once the sun goes down that when the Baku city truly dazzles, everything from Maiden's Tower to the Old City walls to museums to government buildings all get the electric treatment.
